A Case of Grief

When a family member dies, children react differently from adults. Preschool children usually see death as temporary and reversible, a belief reinforced by cartoon characters who die and come to life again. Children between five and nine begin to think more like adults about death, yet they still believe it will never happen to them or anyone they know.

Adding to a child's shock and confusion at the death of a brother, sister, or parent is the unavailability of other family members, who may be so shaken by grief that they are not able to cope with the normal responsibility of childcare.
Parents should be aware of normal childhood responses to a death in the family, as well as signs when a child is having difficulty coping with grief. Summer is a child where Homeopathy has helped and continues to help her live with the loss of her father while being able to express this with her brother and mother.
Anamnesis
Summer’s Dad died in 2013. Mum came to see me because of Summer’s challenging behaviour since her father’s passing. ‘She is acting act with rage, outbursts on one hand and on the other hand being clingy and irritable’. 
Family anamnesis
Mum is well but has had high blood pressure since her husband’s passing. There is a cancer miasm(genetic disposition) in the background.
Findings at the First Visit
‘We went to the supermarket and she lost it there. Kept crying, angry at me, and her brother’.
‘She is normally a happy contented child. She is the opposite at the moment. Normally she loves playing games, lego, teddies. She is a free spirit’.
‘In play school she got lots of coughs that go to her chest. Immediately needs antibiotic to relieve it.’
‘She is a great patient, just sleeps, no energy’
‘She usually feels sick in the stomach when ill.’
‘Dreams of Dad at the moment. Fairy stories, lots of imagination. She talks to Dad’.
‘Takes time to fall asleep’

Summer is doing well, developing and growing through her sad loss of her beloved father. Her Mum is in contact with me over guidance for acute homeopathic remedies for the children and herself.
