Homeopath Edel Bolger O’Hora (Jan 2023) Maria Montessori (early 20th century educator who developed a teaching method named after her) advocated teaching children how to do skills properly. The Montessori Method is generally based on the idea that children learn best when the environment supports their natural desire to acquire skills and knowledge. One of the basic principles of Montessori teaching is how to teach the child how to take care of themselves and their environment and so to train the child how to do skills properly. Give them the proper equipment and teach them how to use it safely and appropriately. Children have a natural urge to learn. Giving children tasks and chores to do makes them feel useful and shows that you trust their ability. Encourage children to help rather than demand it and don’t criticise their efforts, praise them. The children will thrive. Observe your child and see what they are naturally drawn to. Maria Montessori taught that children learn quickly and thoroughly when they are naturally interested in something. For Example if your child shows a particular draw to cooking, take the time to show them what you are doing and allow them to take part in the activity in a safe and age-appropriate way. When you are doing a chore, involve your child. Be patient and show them the right way to do a new skill. This can be very enriching and rewarding for both parent and child. As children develop they show characteristics and traits that define them. In Homeopathy these traits lead to the Constitutional Remedy for the person. What and how people experience their world is internalised and defines them in terms of character and resilience to the world they live in. Another influence is the genes their inherited from their parents, grandparents. Certain families have ‘chesty’ features, other families have ‘stomach’ features and others have’ bone’ features. This module includes a discussion on how by knowing a constitution and inheritance within the child can help their immune system when it comes to resisting flu/coughs/colds. Building and developing self esteem in our children is part of living. Children thrive when they have a good sense of self worth. Parent’s worry that they will harm that sense of worth when it comes to setting boundaries for the family. When the boundaries are breeched then having a planned sanction system that is fair is important. There is also a needs to have a system where the child can speak up for themselves and have their view listened to and heard by parents. Family meetings are that forum. The module cover that in more detail. Maria Montessori dedicated herself to advancing her child-centered approach to education. She lectured widely, wrote articles and books, and developed a program to prepare teachers in the Montessori Method. Through her efforts and the work of her followers, Montessori education was adopted worldwide. The Montessori Method fosters rigorous, self-motivated growth for children and adolescents in all areas of their development—cognitive, emotional, social, and physical. This method is a good role model for families to follow when empowering children to learn and become independent and responsible adults. Reference:
