In my practice I use Dr. Heiner Frei’s Polarity Analysis when choosing a Simillimum. Polarity analysis (PA) is a method that leads to an efficient and reproducible choice of remedy and increases the precision of prescriptions. It is a development of Boenninghausen’s concept of contraindications. Polarity Analysis (PA) was developed by Heiner Frei for a scientifically rigorous Swiss double-blind study with homeopathic treatment of hyperactive children. This study demonstrated a significant difference between high-potency homeopathic remedies and placebo. The main challenge in reaching this result was to improve the reliability of all the factors used to determine the remedy. Conventional Treatment for ADHD is: 1. Counselling the Parents 2. Occupational Therapy 3. Psychotherapy 4. Pharmacotherapy—Methylphenidate(amphetamine derivatives) and Atroxetine Prominent Symptoms for ADHD are: Conner’s Global Index to Assessment Scale Excitability Cries easily and Often Restless, fidgety Always on the go Destructive Lack of Stamina Poor Concentration Rapid mood changes Easily Frustrated Disturbs othe children The Conclusion from the Swiss Study showed: 1. Effects of homeopathy are not placebo effects 2. With long term treatment 75% of all patients can be stabilized with homeopathy alone 3. For optimal improvement, the homeopathic remedy must fit the individual patient symptoms exactly Boenninghausen(1785-1864) strived to match the patient’s set of symptoms and especially the modalities as closely as possible to the ‘genius’ of the remedy. The genius of a remedy includes the modalities, sensations, and clinical findings that have repeatedly appeared in the provings at different locations and have been healed by this remedy. Polarity Analysis is based on the understanding of polar symptoms and gradation in remedies. Polar symptoms are those symptoms that have an opposite aspect, an “opposite pole” such as thirst / thirstlessness, cold aggravates / cold ameliorates, desire for fresh air / dislike of fresh air. A patient can have only one pole of a polar symptom. He is either thirsty or thirstless. Since the symptom set of a remedy is composed of the observations of several provers, a remedy can possibly cover both poles. The polarity difference indicates the level of congruence(compatiability) between patient symptoms and homeopathic remedy. The higher this polarity difference, the more the remedy corresponds to the patient’s characteristic symptoms, assuming there are no contraindications. Working tools that are to be used for case solving with polarity analysis is Software of Boenninghausen‘s Therapeutic Pocketbook 2000, Polarity Analysis Checklists and Questionnaires (free download from www.heinerfrei.ch) A dictionary of the Materia Medica, Textbook: Heiner Frei, Polarity Analysis in Homeopathy, a Precise Path to the Simillimum. Despite hurdles, and with patience and perserverance, there can be very gratifying results with Homeopathy for people who have ADD/ADHD, allowing them to live a life with less symptoms and better concentration during the learning and experience of life.
