Vipasana-The Meaning of Fire

This article is carrying on my articles about the Vipasana Group. Fire started it all you could say when the ‘big bang’ happened and the Universe started to expand and develop. Fire is red and we associate red with passion, intense love to anger and violence — representing both cupid and the devil. It is a hot, strong, stimulating colour that represents excitement and energy.

The Sun is fire, hot and has the potential to ‘burn’ things up. Only that we are at the distance we are from the Sun we may be destroyed with the heat. It is a star and is destined to explode at some stage and become a meteor in space.

The hearth of the home is traditionally the gathering of the family around a fireplace where stories are swopped, neighbours come to meet and paly music/games. Spend time. Though houses shelter us from the burden of distance and infinity, there is nowhere we can go to hide from the universe according to John O’Donoghue.  Both outside us and within us, infinity surges. Maybe the passion of our universe is derived from its origins in fire. ‘Each person and object extend beyond themselves into the flame of ‘presence’.  Yet the sum of our knowledge is small in comparison the the unknown.

The vigilance of Brighid and mary

The hearth is also the place of warmth, belonging and intimacy. This is a powerful metaphor for the spiritual quest, for the hearth is the place where the heart is at home.There is a longing in all spirituality: to come in out of the winter of alienation, self–division and exile and into the hearth of warmth and at-one-ment.

The spiritual journey is the journey home. In a sense there is no journey at all. If there is , it is just a few inches long.  It is the bringing together again of the circle of the psyche, that place within us where the circle has broken. Then the whole of our inner light and energy can flow again. 
Fire seems to be an exclusive human ability. The breakthrough from animal to human lies in the ability to use and control fire. Fire is a crucial and powerful force. It is essential to making tools and weapons. There is little distance between the spark and a furnance. It is the force that cleanes. Fire burns off the dross. Only pure alloy survives. This is the purgatorial aspect of fire.

Whenever a person goes through life changes that take them away from their safety zone, or level of accustomed comfort. The colour red grounds them soundly in their experience. Red is a colour that has density and gravity.
